Student Ambassadors are youth volunteers who go above and beyond in their service to Clothes To Kids of Denver. Students looking for a challenging, on-going service project are encouraged to find out more about becoming a Clothes To Kids Student Ambassador on our Volunteer Opportunities page.
Marko was named as a Student Ambassador in 2012. When Marko was 11 years old and serving as Student Council President at Steck Elementary, he proposed an ambitious goal of placing 50 donation bins in schools to collect clothing for Clothes To Kids by the time he graduates high school in 2019. Marko successfully piloted the program at Steck and then sought out the support of the RK Foundation (of Denver-based mechanical contractor RK). RK agreed to designed and constructed the bins in their sheet metal fabrication shop and deliver them to the partnering schools. The Clothes To Kids School Bin Program is now in full swing and there are currently 20 bins placed in schools across the Denver.
In recognition of his ongoing community service efforts at Clothes To Kids and elsewhere, the Denver Public Schools (DPS) Board has recognized Marko with an official proclamation honoring “outstanding dedication and commitment to families in Denver, as well as bringing honor and pride to the community.” In 2013, he was named Colorado’s Outstanding Philanthropic Youth. He is also the recipient of the Optimist Club of Monaco South 2015 Best of Super Citizens Award, CO State Representative Paul Rosenthal’s 2015 Stellar Student Award, the 2015 Kohl’s Cares Local Denver Scholarship Program Award and the 2016 Denver Council No. 1 Cryptic Masons Humanitarian Award.
In addition to his service work with Clothes To Kids, Marko has organized soccer gear drives through the MLS Colorado Rapids Soccer Club where he is a member of the Rapids’ U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He has collected children’s books for Children’s Hospital Colorado, winter blankets for Denver’s homeless and dental hygiene products for displaced children in Uganda. He has also raised money to train Canine Partners of Colorado service dogs and volunteers at Denver’s Good Shepherd Catholic Church annual Lenten fish fry dinners. In 2012, Marko co-founded Colorado for the Tiger Salamander, which successfully passed legislation to designate the Western Tiger Salamander as CO’s official state amphibian.
Marko is a student at Denver’s East High School and enjoys playing the piano, baking as well as sports and wildlife photography.
Lilia was named a Student Ambassador in 2015 for her outstanding outreach to the community for clothing, shoes, socks and underwear. She was searching for an organization that could use help and finds ways for kids to meaningfully contribute to the lives of other kids. She was inspired by the stories of the families Clothes To Kids serves and wanted to find ways to help and to learn from others.
Lilia is in the seventh grade at the Denver School of the Arts where she majors in Creative Writing. She loves to read, play soccer, swim, ski, run cross country, and spend time in the mountains. She is passionate about finding ways to connect with local groups and contribute to families in her community. Lilia has hosted toy drives for families at Warren Village and the Gathering Place. She and her family have for the past four years organized a fundraising team to benefit for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. She is excited to partner with Clothes To Kids to raise awareness of the important work the organization does and the needs that remain unmet, and to help support other kids in her community.
Andrew was named a Student Ambassador in January 2012 after coordinating a large-scale clothing drive for Clothes To Kids for his Eagle Scout project. The project involved 61 volunteers, who served a total of 245 hours. The drive brought in 140 bags of clothing, shoes and coats in late December 2011, which allowed Clothes To Kids to open several extra days before the holidays and gave many kids a warmer, brighter December!
Andrew looks forward to continue volunteering with Clothes To Kids and hopes to help others organize clothing drives and service projects.
Andrew is a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 560, and has completed all of his Eagle Scout requirements, including 28 merit badges. As a Cub Scout, Andrew completed each of the 176 Cub Scout awards, including the Arrow of Light, which is the highest honor in Cub Scouting. For this accomplishment, Andrew was featured on 9News and in The Denver Post.
In his free time, Andrew plays the piano and ukulele and is on the football and swim teams. Andrew also enjoys art, movies, outdoor activities, spending time with family and traveling.
Mara was named a Student Ambassador for her long-term involvement with Clothes To Kids. Mara has held many small clothing drives for Clothes To Kids over the past several years with her Girl Scout troop and her friends. After learning more about the Clothes To Kids mission, Mara committed to volunteer in the boutique’s back room on a regular basis beginning in 2015. In honor of her bat mitzvah in December 2015, Mara held the first ever Sole Train Shoe Drive, where she collected more than 400 pairs of new and gently used shoes and boots. Her goal is to educate people about Clothes To Kids while making a difference in the community by providing shoes and clothes locally.
Mara is a 7th grade honor student in the Cherry Creek School District. She has a passion for supporting nonprofits that help local residents because it makes her sad to see that other students do not have the same advantages that she enjoys. Mara especially enjoys volunteering because it allows her to make a difference in the lives of others. She and her family volunteer regularly at the Weinberg Food Pantry, Lunchbox Express and Clothes To Kids.
Mara’s favorite pastimes are making people laugh, rock climbing, acting, eating chocolate, wearing sparkly clothes and giving advice to her friends. In her free time, Mara’s favorite thing is to hang out with her friends and family.
